Future Pilots Welcome

Interested in becoming a Private Pilot?

If aviation has always been on your mind—but you’re not sure what the first step is—you’re in the right place. Michiana Air Activities (MAA) is a nonprofit flying club based in Elkhart, Indiana, and we love helping curious newcomers understand what flying is really like. You don’t need to know the lingo or have a plan already. Most pilots started exactly where you are: interested, excited, and unsure of the path. This page is meant to make the process feel simple, approachable, and realistic.

Step One: Come Meet Real Pilots

The fastest way to get clarity is to spend time around people who already do it. Our club meetings are open to family members and prospective members, and you’re welcome to attend—even if you’ve never been in a small airplane. You’ll get to meet local pilots, ask questions, and hear what training actually looks like day to day. We meet monthly on the third Thursday of the month.  Want to reach out before the next meeting?  Send us an email!

A Place for You (and Your Family) to Be Included

Flying often becomes a family adventure, not just a personal hobby. That’s why our meetings are open to family members and why we welcome prospective members who want to bring a spouse, partner, or friend along to learn. If you have kids who are curious, or a family member who wants to understand what this is all about, they’re welcome too. Seeing aviation up close removes a lot of mystery—and a lot of anxiety—because it becomes real and relatable. We want flying to feel inspiring and accessible, not intimidating.

How MAA Fits Into Your Future Flying

MAA is a 501(c)(3) organization made up of pilots who share ownership of club aircraft—every member is a partial owner of the planes. While you don’t need to be a member to start flight training, a club like MAA can become your “home base” as you grow into flying and eventually want consistent access and community. Members can be as involved as they want, including volunteering, joining committees, or serving in Board roles. Whether you want to be deeply involved or simply fly and learn, the club is built to support both. The goal is to create a place where aviation stays fun, safe, and sustainable.

Your Best Next Step

If you’re curious, your next step doesn’t have to be big—it just has to be real. Come to a meeting, introduce yourself, and ask the questions you’ve been carrying around. We can point you toward a discovery flight, help you understand training options in the area, and give you a clearer picture of what it takes to become a pilot. You’ll leave with more confidence, a better plan, and a community you can lean on as you start. Aviation starts with curiosity—MAA is here to help you turn it into a first flight.
