Discovery Flight: Your First Step Into the Pilot’s Seat

If you’ve ever looked up at an airplane and thought, “I wish I could do that,” a Discovery Flight is the most natural place to begin. It’s not a test and it’s not a commitment—it’s a real, hands-on introduction to what learning to fly actually feels like. You’ll meet a certified flight instructor (CFI), get a tour of the hangar and our club home at Elkhart Municipal Airport, and see how a flight comes together from the ground up. Then you’ll strap in, taxi out, and experience that moment every pilot remembers—the transition from rolling on the pavement to lifting into the sky.

During your Discovery Flight, you’ll get a front-row view of the area from above and a feel for how pilots think, communicate, and manage the airplane. In many cases—when it’s safe and appropriate—you may even get the chance to take the controls for the first time and feel what it’s like to fly. The experience typically lasts 30 to 45 minutes, and it’s designed to be exciting, comfortable, and confidence-building. You’ll finish with a better understanding of what flight training involves, what comes next, and whether becoming a pilot is the right path for you.

What you can expect on a Discovery Flight

You’ll start with a quick introduction and preflight walkthrough, where your instructor explains what the airplane is doing and why. Next comes taxi and takeoff, followed by a beautiful local flight that lets you experience the sensation of real flying—smooth, controlled, and surprisingly approachable. You’ll see how the aircraft responds to small inputs, how pilots stay aware of their surroundings, and how the instructor keeps everything safe and structured. After landing, you’ll have time to ask questions and talk through next steps based on your goals and comfort level.

Ready for what’s next?

If you love your Discovery Flight, we’ll help you understand the path forward—how training works, what to expect from lessons, and how the club can support you as you work toward becoming a pilot. Many aspiring pilots choose to apply for membership after their first flight so they can begin training in a community that prioritizes safety, proficiency, and a welcoming culture. Either way, a Discovery Flight is the moment where curiosity turns into a real experience—and a real plan.
